Surprise! Bitter Apple Can Make Chewing Worse
Did you know that Basenjis can’t bark.
That bassett hounds can’t swim.
That Newfoundlands have webbed feet.
AND…bitter apple does NOT stop chewing.
Lot of questions about chewing lately.
Most dog owners make the mistake of getting bitter apple, spraying it on their stuff thinking it will stop their dog from chewing.
Many times this will actually make the behavior WORSE.
How can this be?
Let me share a little secret with you. The reason bitter apple does not work is because it is trying to stop the behavior using the dog’s sense of taste.
It is much better and easier to stop chewing using your dog’s sense of smell.
Here is a little test for you. Spray some bitter apple on a slice of cheese and offer it to your dog.
If your dog eats the cheese with the bitter apple on it, HOW will it stop your dog from chewing?
The short answer – it won’t.
If you want your dog to stop chewing, you have to find what your dog does NOT like before you can expect it to deter your dog from chewing.
I show some different ways to do this in the videos on the Good K9 Manners course.
