There is an old story of a farmer who worked his fields for many years. One day his dog ran away.

Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said. “Maybe” the farmer replied.

The next morning the dog returned, bringing with it three other wild dogs. “How wonderful” the neighbors said. “Maybe” replied the farmer.

The following day, his son tried to teach the dog to walk on leash and tripped over a rock and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune. Sorry about your son’s broken leg they said.

“Maybe” replied the farmer.

The day after, the military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing the son’s leg broken they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out.

“Maybe.”

That’s the story I always try to share when I get an email from someone upset about something their dog has recently done.

You see, if you try to take a Zen approach to life, you learn to never judge a situation.

You wait for the outcome.

I’ve met some of my best friends because their dogs were so badly behaved. Their badly behaved dogs lead to a close and lasting friendship.

So if you’re having a tough time with your dog, try to NOT judge the situation, wait for the outcome.
